Portage Hockey Classic
The Annual Portage Hockey Classic sponsored by the Portage Rotary Club features Portage Central High School and Portage Northern High School and is played each December. When the cross-town rivals come together for competition on the ice, it is guaranteed to be exciting!
The Hockey Classic is a fund raiser for the Portage Rotary Club. The Portage Rotary Club was chartered in 1967. The club focuses its efforts on youth related projects, and on the entire family as well. The Portage Rotary Club has concentrated on developing tomorrow’s leaders by providing a significant number of higher education scholarships.
This game typically draws 1,500 - 2,000 fans and has been featured as the Bauer Game of the week.
Within the combination of the Portage teams and Covid, the game was not held this year - stay tuned for what will happen next year.
VS
The Renbarger Jug
The hockey rivalry between Portage Central and Mattawan has grown over many years and in 2002 a trophy was created for the winner of the rivalry game: The Renbarger Jug.
The trophy is named after former Mattawan student and hockey player,
Ryan T. Renbarger who died of leukemia when he was 13 years old.
The Renbarger Jug game is always the second regular season meeting between these two teams, usually in late January or February.
